We all have goals that we want to meet! Some of your goals might be short term goals – you can make them happen in a month to a year. You can also have long-term goals that might take three + years. One of my short-term goals is to save money to purchase a bigger home at the end of the year (it’s crowded in my condo with two babies and a cat). My long-term goals include clearing my student loan balance within the next five years.
No matter if it’s long-term or short-term, how you set your goal can determine if you are successful at achieving that goal. There are many goal setting strategies, but I find setting SMART goals provided the clearest path to goal success.
SMART Goals are Specific – Measurable – Achievable – Realistic – and Time Framed
Specific: Is your goal(s) specific enough? Could you easily identify it once you have achieved it?
Measurable: Is your goal(s) measurable? Do you have clear criteria that will allow you to identify it once you’ve reached your goal?
Achievable: Is your goal(s) achievable? Is this something that you can actually accomplish?
Realistic: Is your goal(s) realistic? It’s okay to have a big and challenging goal but make sure that it is something that you are physically and mentally capable of doing. If not, you can think of another way to reach the goal that might be within your reach.
Time Framed: Does your goal(s) have a time frame? Have you set a timeline and a schedule for completing your goal?
When using the SMART goal method, it is important that you write your goals based on the outcomes you want to achieve and not a task that you want to accomplish.
